Eugene prosecutes and defends in both the Crown and Magistrates’ Courts. As a CPS Grade 2 Prosecutor, he has experience conducting Crown Court trials involving armed robbery, domestic strangulation, and putting a person in fear of violence. He also has experience representing clients at every stage of the process including first appearances, PTPH, sentences and subsequent POCA proceedings.
As well as cases brought by the CPS, Eugene also has experience defending in criminal cases brought by the RSPCA, Trading Standards, and local councils.
Whilst undergoing pupillage, Eugene completed the ICCA Children in Conflict with the Law training, which focusses on the specialist skills required for representing children, and advocacy in the Youth Courts. He has put that training to use in the Youth Court, representing children charged with offences including robbery and s.18 wounding, as well as when dealing with child witnesses in the adult courts
Recent cases
R v JA [2025] (Sheffield) – Eugene was instructed to defend a vulnerable Defendant charged with stalking a stranger over a period of 14 months. Given his vulnerability and treatment that the Defendant was receiving already for his mental health, Eugene secured a 12 month conditional discharge.
R v KA [2025] (Bolton) – Eugene prosecuted a Defendant charged with strangulation. Part way through the Complainant’s evidence, she became overwhelmed and mute. Eugene made an opposed application to vary the special measures to allow the Complainant to be cross-examined over a link despite giving her evidence in chief in person. The Defendant was convicted.
R v JR [2024] (Bradford) – Eugene defended a man charged with sexual assault in a nightclub. Eugene secured an acquittal notwithstanding the incident being caught on 16 minutes of CCTV and the Complainant being found unconscious in the toilet shortly afterwards.
R v MG (Bradford) – Eugene represented a Defendant who pleaded guilty to failing to stop following an accident in which he had hit a 7 year old child breaking her leg and leaving her lying in the road. The Defendant had stopped for a second before driving off. Eugene secured a sentence of 12 weeks suspended for 12 months and a 9 month disqualification from driving.
