A jury at Sheffield Crown Court today unanimously found Wasim Bashir, a former detective constable with West Yorkshire Police, guilty of misconduct in a public office. Bashir had a sexual relationship with a woman while he was the officer in charge of investigating a sexual assault that she had reported. The woman later told investigators that her trust in the police had been destroyed by his behaviour. Tony Dunne of KBW Chambers prosecuted on behalf of the CPS Yorkshire and Humberside Complex Casework Unit. Mr Bashir was defended by Jason Pitter KC, the Leader of the North Eastern Circuit. He was remanded in custody following the jury’s verdict and told that he faces an inevitable custodial sentence. He will be sentenced on Friday 29 August.
