Criminal Law

Matthew Bean is instructed across the North-Eastern Circuit in a wide variety of cases including homicide, fraud, rape, historic child abuse, and drugs offences.
A Level 4 prosecutor (including rape panel), he is regularly instructed in serious sexual offences by Prosecution and Defence including difficult and sensitive cases involving children, historic sexual abuse, and child pornography. He is accustomed to dealing with vulnerable witnesses with the use of the video link.
He is often instructed in all types of fraud including high value theft from employers or vulnerable persons.
He has attended training in prosecuting serious sexual offences and in the use of intermediaries to assist vulnerable witnesses. He is experienced in advising upon all aspects of Human Rights law and regularly contributes commentaries for publication.
His work has included numerous appearances in the Court of Appeal. Recent appearances include the cases of R v Mohemmedu (Appeal against rape conviction) and R v Webber (Appeal against conviction for historic child abuse).
